Temperatures dropped to -5.4C at 05:56 this morning breaking the record for the lowest temperature in 2011. That’s the 3rd coldest January day recorded after 9th January 2010 (-6.5C) and 2nd January 2010 (-6.1C). Up until last year Januarys were reasonably mild; here’s a table of minimum January temperatures:

We had the first air frost of the 2010 autumn last night with a minimum temperature of -0.9C. This was also a record low temperature for October where air frosts are something of a rarity.

Today has been relatively mild and definitely wet, in fact the wettest day so far in what has been a very dry month up until now.
