HEAT BASE: 65.0
COOL BASE: 65.0

January 2007 has behaved in much the same way as in the previous 2 years (for which records exist). A spell of reasonably mild, wet and windy weather for the first few weeks giving way to colder anticyclonic conditions for the end of the month.

The first 3 weeks of the year continued the weather patterns at the end of 2006 with a series of depressions moving across the area from the Atlantic. These gave reasonably mild conditions with maximum temperatures in double figures every day from the 2nd January to the 19th inclusive. These three weeks also gave the majority of the January rainfall with every day a 'wet' day apart from the 14th with recorded no rainfall. Highest rainfall was on the 18th when 0.56" (14.2mm) was recorded. The 18th also recorded the lowest barometric pressure for a January day - 981.6mb at 04:45.  It was windy during this period too with wind speeds up to gale force at times on the 11th, 18th and 20th. Top for the month was 44mph recorded on the 18th.

The 16th was significant in that it brought the first thunderstorm of 2007. This was accompanied by very heavy rain over a short period - about 0.1" (2.5mm) in about 10 minutes. This was sufficient to cause localized flooding in Clonakilty town centre.

Pressure began to rise on the 21st and this marked the change to much cooler and calmer conditions. Air frosts occurred on the 23rd, 25th and 26th with the latter giving the lowest temperature of the month at -1.6?. There was little precipitation after the 21st with only 0.03" (0.8mm) being recorded in this period, and most of that was due to melting frosts. The highest barometric pressure for January 2007 was 1037.3mb recorded on the 27th. The 30th of the month saw the least windy January day on record with an average wind speed of just 3mph and a wind run for the day of only 16.6 miles. Somewhat out of character the last day of the month also recorded the highest temperature for the month at 13.5?C.
