The year 2006 also saw several records fall with the coldest temperature recorded of -5.1°C on the 2nd March and the highest wind speed recorded at 51mph on the 2nd December.

The spring started fairly typically with mean temperatures near average and a dry February and a very dry April, the second driest month this year with only 1.03" (26.2mm) of rain.

May was then mild and wet with a mean temperature of 11.1°C, half a degree higher than last years mean. This was followed by a very dry June and Tullig's driest month on record with just 0.58" (14.7mm) of rain. In fact the following two months continued the dry and warm theme for the summer until this broke on 2nd September which saw just under ¾" of rain at 0.73" (18.5mm).

Temperatures  through the summer belie the fact of the summer being very good in 2006 with a maximum temperature for the year of only 25.9°C (18th July), 0.8°C down on last years maximum of 26.7°C (12th July). However the number of days reaching 'warm' temperatures in 2006 was up on the previous year with 3 days over 25°C, compared with 2 days in 2005, and 52 days over 20°C compared with only 36 days in 2005.

As mentioned above September started wet and this set the theme for the autumn months. The 20th September was the first day in the year to record more than an inch of rain at 1.03" (26.2mm) and the whole month recorded more than 6" of rainfall at 6.17" (156.7mm). Temperatures for the last quarter where generally higher than those in 2005 with 6 air frosts in November and December in 2005 compared with only 3  during the same period in 2006.

The year ended with a very wet and windy December  just missing the wettest month on record by 0.06" (1.5mm) with a total of 7.48" (190mm) of rain. The month recorded the strongest winds on record at 51mph on the 2nd December and wind speeds up to Force 8 were recorded on 5 days. The second of December was also the wettest day of the year recording 1.31" (33.3mm).

On the following page you'll find a table of annual highs lows and means compared to last year.
