HEAT BASE: 65.0
COOL BASE: 65.0

A generally warm month with a well defined period of hot and sunny anti-cyclonic weather during the second week. Mainly very dry too; however some very heavy rain towards the end of the month broke the dry run and made July the third wettest month of 2005.

The month started mainly cloudy, breezy and damp with some rain recorded on each of the first 5 days of July. The 4th had the coldest night of the month with a minimum of 5.7°C and the 5th saw the strongest winds with a near gale force 33mph; this was the strongest since 3rd May this year (39mph). However by the 7th high pressure became established and the run of good weather began.

The next two weeks saw temperatures above 20°C on all days but one (the 18th - 19.9°C) with plenty of sunshine. Maximum temperatures rose daily until the 12th with a top temperature of 26.8°C, the warmest day of 2005 so far and equalling last years top temperature. After his day temperatures never again rose above 25.0°C. This period was also very dry with just 0.01" (0.25mm) being recorded between the 6th and the 22nd July. The 11th was the only day this month to record fog.

From the 22nd to the end of the month low pressure came to dominate the weather and temperatures stayed below 20.0°C. The 23rd and 24th saw some very wet weather with 0.95" (24.13mm) on the 23rd and 1.63" (41.40mm) on the 24th making the 24th the second wettest day of 2005 after the 7th January (2.03", 51.56mm). Until this rainfall July was on target to be the driest month; but after further small amounts of rain on the 29th and 30th it ended up the 3rd wettest with 2.99" (75.95mm) after January (4.70", 119.38mm) and April (4.96", 125.98mm).

The month ended as it had begun, with generally cloudy conditions and cooler temperatures with the 29th recording the lowest maximum of just 15.4°C.

Climactically the month was both warmer and wetter than the average. Maximum temperatures were a good deal warmer than the average with a mean of 20.3°C compared to the Cork average of 18.5°C. Minimums, on the other hand, were slightly warmer than average with a mean of 11.9°C compared to the average of 11.1°C. Overall the mean for the month was 1.3°C warmer at 16.1°C compared to the 30 year average of 14.8°C.

Rainfall was 114% of the average. This was in spite of there being fewer days with rain fall during the month, the bulk of the month's rain falling on the 24th. Wind speeds were very low; compared to the average of 10.5mph the mean was just 3.6mph.

In July we had:

  • Snow: none
  • Hail: none
  • Thunder: none
  • Fog: 1 day (11th).
  • Days over 20°C: 14
  • Days over 25°C: 2 (11th and 12th)
