A very wet month, after the dryness of the first quarter, with 185% of the average rainfall and lots of April showers. Temperatures were above average for most of the month too helped by mild conditions at the beginning and end of the month. The first week started reasonably fine with just a little rain on the 1st and 2nd, the latter was also the warmest day for 2005 up until then with a maximum of 14.6°C.However, by the 5th, things had started to deteriorate with 0.39" (9.91mm) on that date. The rest of the week continued wet with bands of heavy showers and the first of the months hail on the 7th. The 7th also had the maximum wind speeds for the month at 37mph. Temperatures during the second week were cooler with the only overnight air frost recorded on the 9th at -1.1°C whilst the previous day had seen the coolest mean daily temperature at just 4.9°C. The 10th saw the warmest temperature for April (and the warmest for 2005 so far) at 15.3°C. More showers towards the end of the week with hail on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The third week continued in much the same vain with an occasional sunny but cool day interspersed with generally wet or showery weather. The 17th was the wettest day of the month with 1.08" (27.43mm) and the 19th recorded the only thunder of the month. The 22nd was again wet all day with another 0.84" (21.34mm) recorded. Average temperatures during this week were depressed by cool nights and mediocre daytime temperatures. The final week saw warmer average temperatures but a good deal more rainfall too with another 1.42" (36.07mm) in the last 6 days of the month. The 28th had the mildest average temperature at 11.8°C.
