May 2005 was definitely a month of two halves – dry the first half and wet the second. The month was a little warmer than average; but not significantly so, though it was the 5th month to be warmer than the 30 year average. Rainfall was 83% of the 30 year average, that’s the 4th month to have a below average rainfall.
After a little rain on the first 3 days high pressure set in from the 4th and lasted until the 17th. These two weeks saw very little in the way of rainfall with only 0.10″ (2.54mm) during this period. The 6th was the warmest day of the month, and the warmest so far for 2005, when temperatures reached 18.2°C; whilst the 10th had the coolest minimum of the month at 0.9°C.
From the 18th onwards low pressure came to dominate the weather and every day apart from two saw some rainfall. Despite the continual wet weather the daily totals were not large with the highest being 0.53″ (13.46mm) on the 25th. The 19th to the 22nd saw some heavy showers with hail on the 22nd. The 28th was noteworthy seeing an atmospheric pressure range off 22mb over the 24 hours between 995mb and 1017mb.
